Kelley asked Caragh M. O'Brien:

Caragh- I really enjoyed The Birthmarked Trilogy and was sorry to see it end, but I have read The Vault of Dreamers and really enjoyed it as well. Was it difficult to jump into a whole new set of characters? PS- I am VERY happy to hear that you are working on a Vault 2, because I would really like to know where this story progresses from the end of the first book! : )

Caragh M. O'Brien Kelley ~ Thanks! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Gaia's story, and I'm curious about what happens in Vault 2 myself. Certain answers are slippery at the moment.
As for your question, I was a bit sad about leaving my characters from the Birthmarked trilogy because I was deeply invested in them. They were safe for me, too, and by contrast, everything about Vault felt unknown and uncertain, so yes, it was somewhat difficult to switch over. That said, I'm committed to writing novels that challenge me, ones that compel me to grapple with ideas I don't yet fully understand, so working on The Vault of Dreamers has been engrossing. It was time to move on, and I'm glad I have because now, of course, I'm as invested in Rosie as I ever was with Gaia.
