When Harry Lee arrives at home and is recognised, the butler Tressilian thinks "that bold arrogant jaw, the high-bridget nose, the rollincking eye. Yes, they had all been there three years ago" meaning he saw him somewhere three years ago, but then it is clearly stated that he was away for years (twenty accoding to Harry himself) in several occasions in the book, so I was suspecting the butler! Why this sentence then?

That person could have arrived in the locale about three years ago.(less)
