What bargain is Howl referring to when he says, “But I brought it on myself by making a bargain some years ago, and I know I shall never be able to love anyone properly now,” (Ch.14) in response to Sophie asking why Howl dumps so many women? Or maybe it's not answered in the book?

I was under the impression that the real reason she cursed Sophie was because of that moment of interest Howl expressed towards her in the street at the start of the story.(less)
