To my best guess, I don't think it likely they would bother to read any English novel. Even widely popular English novels that have political nuances like The Poppy War trilogy have hardly attracted their attention :)

Another question :) You said that Chen Yuanyuan took the Taoist name Yu An, but all I could find was “寂静”, I was just curious because I wanted to track down the Anfu Garden as I live not far from Kunming. Could you tell me the Chinese for the garden too, if it really exists? The only place I could find here associated with Chen Yuanyuan was 宏覺寺/三聖庵. Thanks!

She studies the languages, history, literature and philosophy of the three major cultures. Was it typical for concubines to be encouraged to be both "athletic and knowledgeable?" Was there a school for concubines or how were they chosen (from nobility, perhaps)?
