A lot of relationships are different, most characters have different background stories, there are new characters, characters who died very early on in the book are alive way longer in the TV show, one of the main characters of the book is outside the dome in the show, etc ... There are too many differences to count.
I also think you lose part of the totalitarianism allegory in the show, as Big Jim's grip on the town seems less tight and you don't have the outside perspective of the situation.
I don't think it is worth it to watch the TV show, the first season is good but the rest disappoints. I personally didn't like the second and third seasons of the show as I felt they didn't do justice to the books. It feels like the scenarists were on drugs to be completely honest. (less)
