I know these aren't real characters and she says they weren't even based on anybody, but I'm wondering if there is any record of a person or person's stealing immigrant children and sending them away on orphan trains. I have searched the internet quite a bit and though I found some Q&A's with the author, I couldn't find information on this. (?)

Ellen Marie Wiseman specifically states that this aspect of the story was used as "creative license" to build the characters. There were children who were orphaned, but according to my maternal Grandmother, who lived in Philadelphia and lost a husband and infant son to this flu in 1919, many of the orphans were taken in by family, friends and neighbors. The strength of the German community she belonged to endeavored to ensure that there was "no child left behind".(less)
