Goodreads asked L.M. Sutton:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

L.M. Sutton Follow your dreams. If you have always wanted to be a writer, do it. Have reasonable expectations, but work hard. For those of us starting out, we may not have the funds to hire the expensive professionals to edit our work. If you are on a tight budget, I recommend convincing a friend or two who have backgrounds in English and literature to help with editing. Get a few beta readers and be very open to constructive criticism and heed other's advice. There are also freelancers on sites such as UpWork who can be hired, often at reasonable rates, to provided editing and proofreading services.

One mistake I did not realize I kept making was using the British English version of a word instead of the American English version. While it was techncally correct, I am an American and all of the other aspects of my writing was American English, thus I made the correction and will no longer make this mistake.
