The inspiration came from childhood, specifically experiences of anxiety and depression that were similar to Finley's, and long summer days playing with cousins in the woods. Stories have always been important in terms of pure enjoyment, escape and comfort, and also understanding the world, so Finley's experiences are largely autobiographical in that regard.
