Can someone PLEASE explain what the heck was the deal with the scene where Alva stands him up and he goes to her house only to find her with some man? Her mother being there and asking if Jules wanted a juice or soda first, made it all the weirder. I kept waiting for some resolution about why she did that, and a couple of times they seem to be about to go there, only to veer away again.

I think she's afraid of being abandoned and as a weird reaction to that, she keeps pushing Jules away. At the same time she wishes he'll see past it and will stick around, somehow proving her she's worthy and lovable. That, even if you are the terrible person you think you are, someone will still put up with it and love you.
I think something like that actually happens a lot in real life, too.
And her mother... well, they were constantly fighting, I could see her doing it out of spite, too. (less)
