Goodreads asked Rachael Sircar:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Rachael Sircar My aunt Lucy had Down Syndrome. She had a beautiful heart and a sweet, stubborn personality. She was the inspiration when writing 'The Girl Across the River'.
I strongly believe that people with special needs are under-represented in novels and try to show how differences and personalities blend to make a whole person, not a label. This was especially prevalent when writing this novel.
The focus is not on the fact that Emily has Down Syndrome, but on the fact that Samuel is falling in love with a girl. A girl that he clicks with, a girl that he loves, a girl that he would like to cherish for the rest of his life.
Samuel sees beyond Emily's challenges to the person within.
If only real life were that simple, this would be a better world.
