Goodreads asked Fran Smith:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Fran Smith When my husband was ill, I started to write him letters on the train as I travelled to work. I wanted him to have a reason to walk to the letter box at home, so I posted them in London and they were delivered the next day. I soon ran out of things to say about the daily commute, so I started to invent characters and wrote in their voices. I wanted to make him laugh, but also to keep him guessing, so he never knew from day to day which character was writing. Eventually our favourite character was Sister B. She's funny because she's innocent and doesn't really understand the modern world. She and the other sisters have a lot of problems, but they are indomitable and cheerful, so their world is a gentle one to escape to.
