If we are assuming that every writer is godlike in their writing, and that they obviously get to decide about the fate of each one of their characters, then the answer to this question becomes quite clear.
Evaristo hates Shirley!
She's the plainest, meanest, of the 12 women of this book. And she's the only one with explicit homophobic behavior. Her husband having an affair with her mother behind her back is Evaristo's evil to Shirley ;-)
