Do you really need to read the glass books? I'm looking to get the boxed set of the study-series and the glass series isn't included in that. I've read the synopsis of Storm Glass and it seems to be about entirely different characters, so I wonder how okay it is to skip them?

Maria V. Snyder Hi Lisa! No you don't need to read the Glass books - it is about a different character, however it's set in the same world and many characters from the Study books are in the Glass books. I do suggest you read the short stories that go between the books (especially Ice Study - it should be read before Shadow Study - book 4).
