Do I need to read Homegoing first? Are these two novels related?

Allie Beinhacker No, but you should! Homegoing is beautiful.
Sadhana Chevireddy Homegoing should not be missed!
Crystal Low NO, but Homegoing is one of the best books I've read. I highly recommend it. I do not believe Transcendent Kingdom comes close to the brilliance of Homegoing.
Chrissy Totally different books
Daniel I agree---Homegoing is beautiful and should not be missed.
Barbara As others have pointed out, they're not related and I much preferred Homeland. I eagerly read Transcendent Kingdom because I was so enamored with Homeland but I was very disappointed by it.
Cecil Transcendent Kingdom is a separate, and much better, novel than Homegoing.
Pamela Huffman So funny that you should say this. I was wondering if Gifty was one of the final two characters in Homegoing (it’s been a while since I read it and I borrowed the copy I read so I don’t know their names.) I don’t think it is the case (although how do I know the name Gifty?? Was there another character somewhere called Gifty?) but wouldn’t it be so cool if it was a continuation of homegoing?? Ahhhhh, I can dream...
Fergie The two books are completely different. I liked Homegoing BUT I LOVED Transcendent Kingdom. Even though Homegoing is a novel like Transcendent Kingdom, Homegoing (to me) seemed to be a string of short stories about the characters that the author tied together to form a novel. It was beautiful, but in a different way than this -- Gyasi's 2nd novel. Transcendent Kingdom is a remarkable story that I believe will stand among the author's greatest works, no matter how many books she writes.
Mary Ellen Wessels Agree! You definitely don't have to read it first but Homegoing was a powerful book and, although the ties aren't crucial, it is interesting to think of the connections.
