They were tethered by a piece of cloth, hand in hand, Kyle slipped and was going to fall but she held on to him. He was hanging and she couldn't get him up, then she panicked and opened her hand to let go so she can be saved. The fabric was tied to her wrist so Kyle didn't fall to his death and eventually made it back up, but he saw that she opened her hand to let go.
