Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Brenda Nichols As with my debut novel, Beginning in Shadow, and the series I'm writing now, every idea starts with the simple question "what if?"

Beginning in Shadow came from an idea about dimensional travel, sort of a multiverse where the main character Ginny, could travel from one realm to another. Each one with people and species unique to that particular place. The desert realm is populated by reptilian people called Djinn. Then there are the various realms of the Fae, a forest realm, an ice realm, and so on.

My current work is based loosely on The Little Match Girl. My question that started the idea was what if the little match girl was a vengeful spirit? What if the main character's purpose is to stop the carnage? What if the main character could talk to the dead, or even step into limbo where spirits wait to move on?

And so it goes from there. Thanks for asking.
