One night soon after my mother passed away I received a phone call. The woman's voice said "Brenda?" The line went dead except for a bit of static. They didn't hang up, I did.
To this day I don't know who it was, and they never called back.
Maybe it wouldn't be a plot for a mystery, but it's still a mystery to me.
Thanks for the question.

Other than myself? Probably L.D. Rose who writes dark paranormal romance. I love her style and attention to detail.

As with my debut novel, Beginning in Shadow, and the series I'm writing now, every idea starts with the simple question "what if?"
Beginning in Shadow came from an idea about dimensional travel, sort of a multiverse where the main character Ginny, could travel from one realm to another. Each one with people and species unique to that particular place. The desert realm is populated by reptilian people called Djinn. Then there are the various realms of the Fae, a forest realm, an ice realm, and so on.
My current work is based loosely on The Little Match Girl. My question that started the idea was what if the little match girl was a vengeful spirit? What if the main character's purpose is to stop the carnage? What if the main character could talk to the dead, or even step into limbo where spirits wait to move on?
And so it goes from there. Thanks for asking.

Inspiration is a funny word and fickle to those who look for it. I always begin with the question, "What If?" Everything develops from there, or at least an idea is born that I can use later.

I'd love to write a sequel to "Beginning in Shadow", and maybe I will one of these days. At the moment I'm working on a story that's Beauty and the Beast meets The Invaders or V. Yes, I know, I'm dating myself.

The simplest advice of all. Sit down and write. Get the words down first, then polish it until it gleams.

It's an ideal life for a recluse. I've never been much of a social butterfly, preferring the company of characters and places I have in my head. I've been a solitary creature for most of my life, and this allows me the latitude of traveling to imaginary places, having adventures I never would have had, and meeting extraordinary people along the way.

Of late, I write the synopsis. A simple wording from beginning to end. Something I can build on, and something that has to be completed anyway for submissions. It seems to break the stalemate and get me on track again.

She'd never meant to tell the story. Yet it bled from her in words of red.

Going old school here, but I'd travel to Rivendell in Middle Earth. It's rife with history, artifacts, books and scrolls I'd love to rifle through, and tales told of ages past. It seems a peaceful place to spend a month or two.

I need to finish "My Brother's Destroyer" by Clayton Lindermuth. It's written in narrative that is fresh and unusual and takes us into the world of moonshine and dog fighting. Dark and gritty, with no holds barred, and a surprise or two along the way, I'd recommend this book.
