While you were researching and writing Scientology, were you ever (or did you feel) personally threatened or intimidated? - EH

Lawrence Wright No. The threats were all legal, and there were a gazillion. But I was careful in my research and writing, and I was backed up by fact checkers and lawyers, first at The New Yorker then at Knopf and finally at HBO. There have been occasional investigators sent by the church who followed me to pubic events but they were harmless. There are still attack ads against me on the internet. I never had the level of harassment that ex-members have endured.
