What is the single most surprising fact you learned while researching for “The Looming Tower?” The thing that made you step back and start looking at everything differently.

Lawrence Wright There was so much to learn it's hard to narrow it down to one thing. But I'll say the most delightful thing I learned is how interesting are the minds of the sources in public health that I talked with. Sometimes I'd paint myself into a corner with a plot twist, and I didn't have the scientific knowledge to find a plausible way to escape. I'd tell my sources and see them light up: a puzzle to solve! That's when I realized that much of medicine is a riddle that calls upon a kind of genius to solve.
