Have you spent time in Jeddah? (I grew up there during the 90s.) If so, what were your impressions of it and of Saudi society?

Lawrence Wright I spent three months there in 2003 researching "The Looming Tower," and then went back twice more after that. I wrote a long piece for The New Yorker, "The Kingdom of Silence," that you might be interested in. It's in my collection "The Terror Years."

I read you're memoir on Texas right after I transplanted to the Lone Star State. I still reference it when I try to explain the history and region to others. Its a great read that I heavily relate to. When I read about "The End of October" I immediately thought of Michael Crichton. Do you think that your novel is similar to Crichton's style? Any inspiration from him?
