Biggest question of all is what to write. It becomes even more pointed as you get older and you have to accept the limitations of time. Because of my background as a journalist, I am drawn to real events and characters, even in my fiction. I like to enter worlds that are foreign to me, whether it is actually a foreign land or an enclosed culture, like counter-terrorism or public health. Being a writer gives you a passport into these other worlds.

Last year, I read your book Going Clear and also The Looming Tower. I became fascinated with how cults lure people to believe. In hindsight, do you think there are other belief systems that you think could be worse? And what do you think about the TV adaptation of the looming tower?
