Cathy Hunt I don't think you can view this plot design as inconsistent or full of mistakes. The author seems to have made a choice to fill in the back and future stories of Melody's birthday party by hopping around. Occasionally upon starting a new chapter it took me a couple of pages to figure out who was narrating when, but after finishing I have a pretty clear picture of the order of the whole story.
