My family always talks about how amazingly Tracy is written, in that she reads as a realistic female. Apart from the larger identity of being a female detective, was her way of thinking shaped by anyone else?

By my mother, sisters, a homicide detective I know and the many women I have worked with. They were all strong-willed, effective and handled problems differently than men. It's been a lot of fun to think creatively and outside of the box, rather than just try to always use physical strength.

I loved the Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell and also the Tracy Crosswhite series...I looked back on a few of my private notes and was stunned, in a way, that I had marked several passages that dealt with hope and how the characters recognized the importance of hope. During these frightening dark days of isolation and fear, I wondered if you deliberately seek to give us hope through your characters?
