C.W. Ashley asked Marilyn Foxworthy:

Hi Marilyn, question from a new author. How many words do you write a day?

Marilyn Foxworthy I find that I often average about 1000 words per hour and write 5000 to 7000 words per day. Some days less, some days more. That's for a first draft.

But, all of the authors that I know work at different rates and have varying creative processes. A friend of mine might write 3000 words an hour. She may also take six months or more to finish a book because her process is different than mine. There is no way to compare what each of us does.

My writing is limited by how fast I type, not how fast my story comes to me. Hers may be limited by how fast she is able to plan each element of her story and make it fit where she wants to go with it. She types much faster than I do.

I know authors who take much longer to write because they are writing a book and I am just telling a story. That's their distinction, not mine. Yeah, I like telling stories. You can't compare what we do to another author.

Thanks for asking. Best wishes.
