This is the fifteenth novel in a series, so there is a lot of backstory that might put some questions in your mind. Generally, Rollins does a good job of "recapping" relationships and events from the last entry early on.
So, you could read it as a standalone, but Rollins has crafted a very long series of events in the Sigma universe. If you're at all interested, go back to Sandstorm and start at the beginning.
But it's not totally required. It's kind of like watching the movie before reading the book. You'll see some gaps that could use filling in, but you can watch without having read it.

Julie
I found it fine as a stand-alone
Jim
You can read any of James Rollins books as a stand alone. There will be some references to previous stories and character relationships that you might not understand but do not let that stop you from picking up any story by Rollins. Beware though, some stories have co-authors which affect the storylines so that the basics are different - such as the undead.
Don
The only problem you might have reading this book as a stand-alone is trying to figure out which character belongs to which character. As far as parts of the story relating back to other books, I didn't find enough of that happening to cause a problem.
Maria Rose
You can read it as a stand-alone but if you start to get hooked into the Sigma series by this book, you will need to backtrack to the first book Sandstorm to understand the team and their partners. There's a short e-book on Kolwaski available on Amazon to explain his contribution to the team.
