Hi! Last year I took a feminist science fiction class where we read the Fifth Season. Your amazing, incredible writing has totally blown my mind and I’ve been reading all your books since that class. Do you have any advice for someone (me) that has more or less quit writing for the time being because of depression?
N.K. Jemisin
Apart from "seek treatment for your depression," no. I'm not going to tell you to just write through it; it's *depression.* It's a serious condition and it can kill you, so please please please take care of yourself, first and foremost. Once that's done, the writing will come, if it's meant to be. But you can't write if you're struggling to live, and that's what depression can be.
Please take care, and good luck.

One thing (of many) that was so impressive to me about The Broken Earth trilogy was that no part of it felt derivative (so rare in fantasy). The only moment that reminded me of anything at all felt like a meaningful echo or homage. When Syenite kills her child rather than let the Fulcrum get him, I thought of Sethe killing her child in Beloved so it would not be enslaved. Was this parallel intentional? Thank you!

Hello and thanks for doing this Q and A. 1. I’m looking forward to the Great Cities trilogy, but as the name implies, books two and three will be about cities other than New York. Can you tell us which ones? 2. Would you ever write a series longer than a trilogy? I kind of want to read a longer series from you, but anything you write will be as great as your existing books, so no complaints either way.

As an anthropology professor I always remember Jamison calling anthropology science fiction. In contrast, I’ve always considered good science fiction anthropology. If you could create an anthropology class based on your books what would it be called and what of your work would be included?
