First, I’d like to say that your books with such diverse characters and brilliant story telling is inspiring! I was curious to hear how you think about putting together magic systems? For example, The Fifth Season with orogene is very unique to that series and where power comes from.

I wrote a blog post about magic systems and what I think of them in general, a few years back. (http://nkjemisin.com/2012/06/but-but-... ). As for the Broken Earth's writing system, I just came up with what felt right.

What did you go through to get your first novel off the ground? More specifically, outside of a writing group, did you get it professionally edited before you went in search of an agent? How polished was it at the start of your search for an agent and how much did it change after?

Thank you for your work. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read so far. Could you say something about your approach to politics, in the worlds you build but also as an author? (I’m always impressed by your attention to power and hierarchy, but also to moments and modes of resistance, so I’m curious if you feel strongly about how much politics to do, for example, or whether the genre lends itself more to certain kinds)
