Barbara Bowman

My only problem with this book: Where is the FISH? Reichl goes into this long story about getting Rocco DiStefano to pose with a monster fish for the cover of some October issue. She talks about the cover selling well, which suggests it actually existed. I can find no Gourmet cover online with this photo, nor do the Gourmets in my collection (1998-2009) have it. Does this cover exist or is the story a false memory?

kaitlyn osborn It is a Collector’s Edition from October 2000.

Kate Magazines often have a different cover for subscribers vs the newsstand - perhaps that’s where the difference lies. Back issue websites might just have the subscriber-only edition like you do.

Here’s an image of Rocco DiSpirito holding what looks to be a tilefish (though the date on this website doesn’t seem accurate):

Gabrielle I'm just rereading the book and this is making me crazy! The photos do seem to exist but surely there would be *one* picture of the cover available somewhere online if this had really happened? Edit: she must be referring to October 2000, which appears to be a "collectors edition" in most archives and not the restaurant issue. I assume this means there's a newsstand version out there somewhere https://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/g...
