Chaol definitely did not live up to his standards and tbh, he was kind of selfish. He was in love with the version of Aelin/Celeana that he thought she was. When she revealed her history, he got all mad at her and wouldn't accept her for who she was. Sam was a great character and even though their romance was very short-lived, he was better for her.
