Not really a question. But I just wanted to say "THANKS FOR THIS AMAZING GIFT". It clarified so many issues that were just questions and questions about a therapist's life. And how to avoid the fear of failing?. If a computer program doesn't work. you correct it. If therapy doesn't work it can be fatal. How do you manage it?

Thank YOU, Sharon, for reading the book--I'm thrilled that it answered so many questions you had! Your question about failure is important, too, and that's why I included the story about the patient I felt that I'd failed, because I wanted to help her but couldn't seem to. It's in the chapter "Fridays at Four." That said, I hope that one of the takeaways from the book is that while we do need one another for so many reason, ultimately we are all responsible for our own lives, for doing the work even when it's hard. We can't "save" people but we can help them save themselves. Does that make sense?

Are you embarrassed of the misogyny in "Marry Him" or has publishing that book allowed you to become immune to embarrassment via a form of immersion therapy? I'm sorry to hear that expecting to be treated as an equal to your male counterparts "fucked up" your love life, as you said in chapter three, but given that numerous women manage to maintain their dignity and find real love, it's odd that you advocate neither.

Hi Lori! First - thanks for the lovely, heartbreaking, hilarious book. I finished it and immediately sent a copy to my mother in law and warned her she would SOB. My question is: to what extent does your clients' pain come home with you? Obviously you thought about 'Julie' a lot in particular, but do you find that to be the norm with your clients, or are you pretty adept at separating job empathy from real life?

As a family physician, I see so many patients who struggle with their ambivalence to change their lives. I recommend this book as a way to get them to start thinking about their lives in a new way. Those who have read it, are so thankful. Thanks for writing this. Maybe you can write one for folks with medical conditions such as diabetes, etc?
