Jenny asked Paula Brackston:

Did you stay at the Great Chalfield Manor for research? How much of the manor's history is real and fictional? It's such a beautiful historical place and love that the book is based on a real place.

Paula Brackston Hi Jenny, yes I spent a night at Great Chalfield. They offer bed and breakfast there, so you could go too! It is such a beautiful and atmospheric place. It really helped me with writing the story to spend some time there, and the owners answered so many questions. I tried to stick to the truth of the history of the building, particularly as it had been added to a great deal over the centuries. In fact, that was what gave me the idea of having Samuel help with improvements for the house. And there is a beautifully carved screen in the great hall. If you ever get a chance to go and see the place I recommend it.
