It doesn't. The technical second book of the series (Seven Surrenders) is actually more like part two of this one.

I would say not very well, at least where the plot is concerned, as things are really just getting underway in this book, and there is foreshadowing employed about things to come. At the end of this book you should be able to grasp and understand the setting of the story, but the story itself is left very much open with a lot of unanswered questions.
