This came up in my email even though it's two years old. Out of curiosity, what have been the real-world jumping off points for events?

Lots of them mixed 'n matched over the years. (I just typo'd "loots of them," which is also true.) You'd have to specify if you want a particular answer, which you may do in the comments. (Although this question falls perilously close to "Where do you get your ideas?")
Somewhere in Sidelines: Talks and Essays there is iirc a series of six short essays I did for Eos back when The Sharing Knife was coming out, discussing the inspirations for that, mm, anti-epic, which would have more length scope than what I can type in this tiny answer box while drinking my morning tea.

Hi! I've been told my whole life there is no such thing as a stupid question, so here I go. I was wondering if you have maybe seen the covers of the Croatian edition of the Vorkosigan saga by the amazig Esad Ribic? Your local fans are very proud of this edition (the translation is also amazing!) so I was wondering what do you think of the artwork? https://www.tumblr.com/fuckyeahesadribic/107642144987/vorkosigan-saga-c

I may agree that Barrayar’s politics have been seen and very good in A civil Campaign so I can do without the constitution. About Jackson hole instead, I think there is a lot to do and it is something that Mark should take care of. Should be the last of “the kids are all right” (even if i’d stay in your marvelous universe for ever and ever, I understand you like to go there less after so many wonderful years)?
