Saanvi Steinbeck needed to include Coyotito's death because it symbolized how Kino had lost what was dearest to him (his family, specifically wife and baby) in his quest for trying to make a fortune from the pearl. This was also important because Kino's behavior towards his wife changed after he decided to sell the pearl. He became extremely abusive and even beat her at one point in the book when she tried to get rid of the pearl because she knew the misfortune that would lay ahead of them if they kept trying to sell it. She knew this because before Kino found the pearl, he was a man living for his family. After finding it, however, he began to live in hope of finding wealth and riches. Hoping this helps! :)
