Can someone help me understand Vera's father's hobby of stealing raptors' eggs. It was stated that it funded his retirement. I don't see how if he kept them locked in a cabinet. Why?

He would be able to keep eggs that didn't hatch or even ones that did if the shells were not too badly broken. Customers in the Middle East (and other places) pay big money for eg Peregrine Falcons. All these birds are protected species so possession without the appropriate permits is a crime which inflates the prices which encourages the crime - same as drug smuggling really.
Hector would likely only have one example of each type and would have started collecting when it was still legal. Many raptor nests now have 24hr video surveillance to deter egg theft.(less)
