Stealing raptor eggs/chicks is quite profitable. He would be able to keep eggs that didn't hatch or even ones that did if the shells were not too badly broken. Customers in the Middle East (and other places) pay big money for eg Peregrine Falcons. All these birds are protected species so possession without the appropriate permits is a crime which inflates the prices which encourages the crime - same as drug smuggling really.
Hector would likely only have one example of each type and would have started collecting when it was still legal. Many raptor nests now have 24hr video surveillance to deter egg theft.

I suppose you could say he sold some of them yet kept his favourites???
I don't know the context to the phrase so maybe when she was saying it "funded" his retirement she meant it kept him busy??
Or maybe he stole eggs for other people if they paid him (clutching at straws)?
