Well I read it at 12 years old and I found it OK, but if you aren't comfortable with things like rape, drugs and cold-blooded murder I would wait a bit. I definitely don't think it should be read by 10 year old or younger people. I hope this helped!
Keira
I was 13 then I read it. Totally fine.
Janet Martin
I agree with those who have said 14 and up--even though there isn't graphic sex or violence, the themes are mature. We have plenty of wonderful fiction for the 12 and 13 yr old crowd, so as a parent and grandparent, I'd say save this one a couple of years. I enjoyed it as an adult, so there's plenty of time to get around to this particular excellent book.

A lot of mature themes like drugs, murder, rape, etc are discussed, so maybe 13+. It just matters on if you think you can handle it.

I'm currently reading this book and I find it to be a good book. Age wise I'd recommend this book to someone who can handle the themes discussed in this book (like murder, suicide, drugs etc). I'd say someone between the ages of 13 and older. I am 15 (will be 16 in July) and find this to be a very suspenseful read but highly enjoying this!
Chloe
It has mature themes but I'm 12 years old and I read it and I'm fine so it really depends on who it is
Beth_Taylr99
I know a 12 year old who's read this and he was fine!
Tobias
I read this book when I was fourteen and I was OK but I wouldn't give it to anyone younger. Preserve their innocence.
Also I feel like book #2 and #3 get a bit more dark so also bear in mind that just because someone is okay with reading the first book, they might not be okay with reading the third book. (And this book is sooooo good that in my opinion it's impossible not to continue.)

I would say 13+

Having read the book at 25, I’m shocked by the answers here. Aside from the mature themes in the book, it’s just plain scary at times. Only due to that, 16 would be a better minimum age than 12. I know I’d have gotten a lot of nightmares/other scares after reading this book at 12.
Manal
I started reading it when I was 12 and ended it when I am 13. To be honest, the age ratings depend on how mature a kid is because I am and I was fine with the mature theme.
raneem
it depends on how mature you are. But keep in mind that the following things are in this book:
rape
drugs
cold-blooded murder
death of a pet
kidnaping
if you aren't comfortable with these things you could wait a couple of years. If you don't mind, go ahead :)

There's nothing too gory or anything but does cover some confronting topics so I would say a mature, young reader: around 13 and above.

It depends on the kid. I read it at 13 or 14 (it was right around my birthday so i’m not totally sure) and loved it! i do think if i had read it a couple years earlier it would’ve scared me though. BUT, i’ve been encouraging my 12 year old sister to read it and i think she would be fine. just know there are themes of murder, rape, sexual relations between a teen and an adult, drug use, among others. also keep in mind the books progressively get darker, especially in the 3rd book which involves a serial killer. i think most kids could read it at 13.

I'm 12 and I just read it and I think that it's good for mature 12+ anything under is just no!
Ellie Bone
i read i at 11/12 but in my opinion i was pretty mature for an 11 year old so i think it's good for 12+ for more mature preteens and teens

I want to know if the r@pe and sexual content in this book is bad cus i want to buy it but my parents are quite strict so i would probs be dead if they read something that goes along the lines of r@pe and s*x ;-;

12 years old and up would be the best age rating. the rape is not very present and stays very vague
M
I read it when I was 11 but i would not recommend it for under 12 tbh
Em
I read it when I was 10 and was terrified, but came back to the trilogy a year later and loved it. It really depends on how much you can handle
Lauren Colley
I would say a good age would be around 14 or 15. Might be too mature for anyone younger but the writing style is definitely aimed at a younger crowd.
Madi
i read it at 12, but would recommend it for 13 or older. i just have a morbid fascination of reading true crime late at night.
Isabella
I'd say a mature 12 year old would be able to handle the content matter - it discusses topics like rape, drug abuse and murder, but has no graphic imagery and is overall a fun and easy book. Would highly recommend to any teenager who is interested in thrillers or true crime
Seth Plate
It handles mature themes, but the worst things happen off-camera. I'd handle this one on a case-by-case basis, but a mature 12-year-old could easily enjoy it while an older kid not prepared for these themes may struggle. You know your kid best!
Issy
It really depends on the person. I’m 11 and I just finished reading this and I found it perfectly fine. However, I am fairly mature for my age and for others I’d say that you should read this around the ages 13-16. Some of the trigger warnings are things like rape, murder, use of explicit language and lots of drug use.
Novel Notices
Probably 14+. Several uses of strong language and allusions to sex, as well as other mature themes like rape and murder.

Julia
I read it at the age of 13 but it deals with some sensitive subjects, like drugs, murder, and rape. So it depends if you're comfortable with it.
Laya
Bro, i read this book at 10 years. and all of the other books. nothing bothered me.
ava
maybe 11 and up, depends on how mature of a reader you are! talks abt rape, drugs and death.
Sasha
I'd say above 15
Lama
I was 13 when I read the book, if you don't find murder or rape triggering then you're fine ! :)
Madalynn Lane
As a 13-year-old I didn't find anything in this book to be too graphic. Yes, there are some brief sexual and drug references but I still found this book to be completely suitable.
Mathilda
I was 13 when I read it. I was fine, but I don't think it's appropriate for kids under 11 or 12, depending on how mature they are. It's an amazing book, though!
