1) Because the captive siren sort of became friends with the scientists. Or maybe because it knew it needed the scientists in order to escape, so basically it was saying, "Buzz off, I need them to think I'm their friend so they would let me free. If they die, I'm stuck."
2) According to the book, the ones outside the pool were sluggish because their gills dried up. The ones in the pool were sluggish because the pool wasn't deep enough. Yeah, 'm confused by that too. I thought they just need water and oxygen to convert food into energy.
3) Only the female had enough power to punch a hole through Heather's submersible.
"The impact from above was enough to drive the submersible more than ten meters down before Heather had fully registered that she’d been hit."
After that, the males probably ate her or fed her to the female.
