I read the book a year ago so I don't remember the plot very clearly but I think the lawyer didn't kill because he wanted to, but rather because he had to, to cover his tracks. The husband was going to find out that he was the site manager so he killed him to cover his tracks. As for Evie's father, I think that was a result of an argument about his wife and how she hired a hit-man.
