What company is this supposed to be parodying? I can't tell, it's just so subtle

Christine Sandquist This book is actually completely fictitious and most assuredly is not related to any companies existing in the real world. I personally think The Warehouse showcases the American work ethic and dedication to environmentalism in an impressive and engaging format. The employees of Cloud have their every need fulfilled - what more could you possibly want?

Panda Looking at the answers it might be that you were the subtle one lol.

They were parodying/report coverage of.... google. Totally google.

-Insert white male name here- Social Media Mediator, Amazon.
Veronica Robinson I'm almost certain this is about Folgers' coffee....
K.v. Khai It's not one company in particular, but an amalgamation of different entities.
Michelle Noble I think it's Amazon. They are already experimenting with drones for delivery. They are also working on automated shipping via trucks. They are putting a serious crimp into the spending habits and profits for stores that sell similar products. However, the rest is what could happen if we let it.
Patrick Pilz Subtle? SUBTLE?! Well, lets see: how many companies are there, that pretty much sell anything and everything? Add to that, companies that work on drone delivery? Pushing the envelope in technology and launching satellites?

And I am not even getting into using the technology for questionable business practices.
Tanya A lot of it seems to be pointing strongly at Amazon, but I think it's aimed at all companies with millionaire/billionaire CEOs and starving employees. The acknowledgements at the end specifically reference a Dunkins Donuts employee
Erin Having read lots of Amazon warehouse accounts the last week, the "pickers" scenes were hauntingly familiar.
Marty Fried What makes you think it's a parody? It seems to be a basic Sci Fi story where you take what's happening now, and stretch it out to what it could become in the future.

In this case, it's the mega corporations in general. In the interview with the author I read, he didn't specify any one company. Although you seem to think you're being clever with a seemingly facetious question, I think you have a pretty shallow view of the book.

librarianka Haha I think it's all of the them (have you read The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google by Scott Galloway?) rolled into one with Elon Musk like figure of the CEO Gibson with the mission "to save" the planet.
Trevor Dennis I am not far into The Warehouse, but Amazon has already come so strongly to mind, I'm starting to worry that Jeff Bezos might have pancreatic cancer and only a year to live! 😧 😉
Melissa Delport While I don't *think* Hart is pointing a finger at Amazon directly, the employee 5-star rating system made me chuckle. I think Amazon just happens to be the only comparable entity to the fictional corp in this book, which is why it comes under fire.
Lo Hilarious question! I do think the book is intended to be set in a world where Cloud actually overtook and destroyed Amazon, though -- it's not just a stand-in. Gibson's blog mentions an earlier company before Cloud that isn't named, but is clearly Amazon, and how they didn't think big enough.

While "a horror book about Amazon" is the whole reason I picked this up (yes, please!), it does seem to touch on larger themes about regulation being bad for business that go pretty far beyond Amazon. I didn't quite expect that.
