Who are some of your favorite authors and have any of their works influenced your own?

Mary Beth Keane The writer who probably had the most influence on my prose style is William Trevor. Studying his short stories taught me how to be efficient in prose, how to let the reader do some of the work. Contemporary authors whose work I love: Louise Erdrich, Elizabeth Strout, Donal Ryan, Maggie O'Farrell, Ann Patchett, Mohsin Hamid, Colson Whitehead. I could go on and on.

When I was reading this, I assume at first it was set in the 50s or even earlier. Was that intentional? It gave me a feeling of the timelessness of the problems here, marriage, addiction, mental illness, etc.
