My dad was NYPD during the same time your book was set and I was struck by how much you captured that environment, and the impact it has on families. It Did you have personal experience with the NYPD?
Mary Beth Keane
No one in my family is in the NYPD, which I suppose is unusual for an Irish American family in a working class town. But when I was growing up the fathers of several of my friends were with the NYPD and I think my fascination started young. I live in the town I grew up in once again and it's still a place where a lot of people - men and women now - are in the NYPD (and FDNY).

Given the closeness and yet distance between these two families central to the story line, this had almost a "Romeo and Juliet" feel to it. Is that a correct interpretation, or has it been too long since I've read R&J to recall? It also felt as though there was a psychological pathology to both families, although clearly to vastly different degrees. Thank you for this wonderful book. It was truly fantastic.
