Linda Elliott-George I believe he still grieved over the loss of his father. and the sight of his two friends (the tailors) in their state as beggars, and what had happened to them was just too much for him to accept. As well, he could not even bring himself to say hello when he saw them on the street in front of his Aunt. He could not live with the state of the world or who he had become. The ending also upset me but that is the power of the author, to choose whatever ending he imagines.
