Otherwise there are many new authors in the same field. I haven't read enough to recommend anyone to compare to masters such as Jordan or Martin. If she hasn't tried her yet Robin Hobb was one the first to write very vivid narratives from multiple POV, in-depth realistic characters, and 'realistic logical' storylines, as fantasy moved away from high fantasy to grittiness and what is now grimdark. Check out the Farseer and Liveship series first.

It's not GoT or WoT, but I always highly recommend Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider series; Brain/Brawn, Tower/Hive and Catteni sequences are pretty good but not quite as strong. McCaffrey was pretty much the first author writing very strong, detailed and realistic characters in tough circumstances, and that was before most of us were born. I still cry when I read some of these books, especially Dragonsinger...

Be warned that as McCaffrey insisted, these are not fantasy, they are actually light space opera SF with a fantasy touch.(less)
