I have--was an exchange student in Leningrad in the '70s, traveled in the region, and returned to do research for The Revolution of Marina M. and Chimes of a Lost Cathedral in 2007 and 2009, most of it centering in St. Petersburg where I had a fellowship--the books are largely set in revolutionary Petrograd--but also visiting Moscow and the towns of the Golden Ring, Tikhvin, Novgorod... Did not make it as far as Udmurtia--still so much more to see!

Hi Janet! I've read "White Oleander" 10+ times now; it seems I need to read it yearly. It's truly my favorite novel, and one of my favorite parts is when Astrid is considering Claire's pearls and wishes her life could be knotted like a pearl necklace so even if something broke, the whole thing wouldn't come apart. Do you recall a particular line or passage from a book you've read that resonated strongly with you?

Hi Janet, I think White Oleander is the greatest piece of fiction in today's literature. The movie was good, but I would love to remake it. Have you ever thought of a dream cast?
