Thanks, Carmen! You can't go wrong with either The Revolution of Marina M. or Paint It Black. One is a young poet in the Russian Revolution, the other is the aftermath of a suicide in punk rock Los Angeles. So one has a big canvas, an adventurous young woman in the midst of political upheaval, lots of poetry, the other is a very small canvas, an art model who has lost her beloved boyfriend, very intense. Thanks for asking! Hope you enjoy them both. There is a second Marina book, Chimes of a Lost Cathedral... some people start with that. Wish you good reading!

Hey Janet! Just read your work for the first time (W. Oleander), and I'm blown away. You convey the rawness of Astrid's feelings, simply with her narrative, but you also encapsulate the air, the light, the color, the heat, and everything else in such descriptive ways, which helped me grasp an entire experience, beyond the words in Astrid's mouth. You say read hard books to get better. Any suggestions of some to start?

Janet, I'm looking for the most comprehensive collection of Russian/Slavic folklore, mythology, fairy tales, etc., but translated into English. I'm hopeful that in doing your research for your latest book you've read something like this? I keep coming across reimaginings, or mini-anthologies, or heavily edited versions of stories that are highly sanitized and less pagan than they ought to be. Any recommendations?
