The entire saying is on a page before the novel. It's part of how kids learn to spell Mississippi. "M, I, crooked letter, crooked letter, I, crooked letter, crooked letter, I, humpback, humpback, I."
I grew up in California, but a girl moved in who told this to our teacher, and we all learned it!
I may be putting nonsense into it, but maybe the crooked is for bent, or twisted life of the main characters. Or, maybe just about Mississippi!

This is an interview called Meet the Writers - Tom Franklin by Barnes & Noble where he explains some of the book. Concerning the title, my main takeaway was that he just liked the way it sounded, hence why it takes place in Mississippi. But I really like Lisa's interpretation of it, that's my head canon from now on.
