I think Agatha is my favorite character. Probably because she's not all that pretty but makes herself as attractive as she can, and you write about the cost, in terms of uncomfortable shoes, too-short skirts, facial masks, makeup, etc. I love Agatha's feistiness! But I want to ask, what made you decide to START writing? Was it scary wondering if your first book would be published?

M.C. Beaton My first books was Regency Gold, and I was prompted into doing it by husband Harry who found me an agent. I gave it to my agent, Barbara Lowenstein, on a Friday and by Monday she had sold it. I was living in Brooklyn at the time and I wanted to stop people in the street and tell them.

I love the Agatha series, and I am a HUGE fan of the Hamish ones! Death of a Gossip was the first cozy mystery I ever read and it kept me hungry for more. How do you keep all the characters straight in your books? Do you keep notes on them all or is it just second nature for you to remember all of it?

Ms. Beaton, Why do you usually kill off the evil protagonists in the Agatha Raisin series? Do you feel sorry for them for having to pay for their crimes and therefore "mercy kill" them or do you want the evil doers to pay the ultimate price for their crimes?
