I'm about two-thirds through The Paris Diversion and am struck by the hyper reality (does that need a hyphen?) of the characters, their relationships and frustrations, and locations. Your style gives me a soles-on-pavement experience, and I love it. Have you lived in/spent time in all of those cities?

Chris Pavone Thank you! And yes: there are dozens of locations in my four novels, and I've spent time in all of them. This is largely because we lived in Luxembourg for a while (that's where I started writing THE EXPATS; that first novel of mine takes place in Lux), which afforded the easy opportunity to travel widely throughout Europe. After we moved back to New York, I continued to visit Paris regularly.

I'm curious to know how you came up with the idea for 'The Expats,' specifically for Kate. I'm liking Kate's unconventional spy history and background a great deal! Were you influenced by anything in particular for the story and the main characters?

While I've yet to read the Ex-Pats, The Travelers just blew me away with the intricate plot, twists and turns and layered characters. From the review I've read of The Paris Diversion, certainly more intrigue and pulse-racing scenes are expected. May I ask how you maintain that pent-up pacing when writing these edge of your seat novels?
