does anyone know why it isn't ya? like what in the book makes it unsuitable for younger audiences?

Lauren Cassidy It's a lot darker than YA. People who have arcs have stated that some of the content warnings that should be included in the final book are:
-Rape (of minors, people under the influence, and people influenced by daterape drugs)
-Overdoses
-Death
-Suicide
-Self harm
-Forced eating of human waste
-Blackmail
-A lot of gore and murder
-Animal deaths (although not in detail potentially)
Judy Lindow Everything Lauren said. I just finished the chapter on what happened at ground zero. Let me say the writing is good. Descriptions of violence are unflinching and terrifying, imo. I found my breathing stop. I would not suggest this for young women under 18. In college, yes. It could a heads-up for young women just out of HS - that dangerous decade from 18-28.
